The Mendip Landscape – Right Under Your Feet

Uncover five Geology Stories from along the Strawberry Line. With exciting, fun facts to learn about Mendip Geology, right under your feed from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon.

Did you know that the Mendips were once at the bottom of the sea, millions and millions of years ago when dinosaurs ruled the earth, and the rocks you are standing are related to the White Cliffs of Dover, over 100 miles away. They are also related to the rock formations you will find along the Jurassic Coast.

So what is a Local Geological Site? They are designated areas of significant local value for geology, geomorphology (how the land changes), places to learn about rock formation and the history of the landscape under our feet. They are the important places to explore Earth Science.

Did you know that the Easton Railway Cutting is one of more than 220 Local Geological Sites across Somerset’s best sites for identified as the best places to discover our geology.
